WHAT IS IT?

Baby eczema (also called infant eczema or atopic dermatitis) affects 1 out of 4 infants.

It shows up as red, crusty patches on the baby’s skin.

Baby eczema comes in 2 main types and it is important to know which one affects your baby to be able to deal with it effectively:

ATOPIC ECZEMA (OR DERMATITIS)

A skin is called atopic when it does not play its role as a natural barrier. More permeable than normal skin, babies with eczema or atopic dermatitis develop a strong sensitivity to all allergens present in the environment.

The skin dries out, gets rashes, itches and pieces of skin come off (they are called scales).

Choose skincare that moisturizes, soothes irritations and protects against allergens. Dermatologists also recommend using products with few ingredients in order to limit the risk of reactions.

CONTACT ECZEMA

In the case of contact eczema, the skin simply reacts to a specific allergen. The moment the skin will touch this allergen or irritant, it will develop a localized skin rash. If contact eczema is more common on atopic skins, it can sometimes be totally unrelated. After identifying the allergen responsible for the skin rash, thanks to skin tests (patch tests), you will need to prevent your baby’s skin from touching this allergen, and that can often be very challenging. Be careful: your watch, a ring or cosmetics on your own skin can cause your baby’s contact eczema.
